WHITEHALL STREET is the true story of a West Indian immigrant’s life in the United States Army. Born in St. Kitts, Bertram L. Charles became an American soldier at the height of the Civil Rights Movement. His experience as a Black in the Army mirrors the segregation of 1960s America. With a focus on getting a solid education, Charles tried to juggle his Army duties while attending school. He was an infantry trooper from 1961-1963 at Fort Dix, NJ; Fort Chaffee, AR; Fort Riley, KS and in West Berlin. Charles would eventually leave the Army with an Honorable Discharge.
